Composer of the Week

Greetings to you, and thanks for stopping by!

Initially, Composer of the Week was a newsletter I had started in my final semester of graduate school.  I suspect the initial purpose was simply to give myself an excuse to research living composers and experience new music.  It grew out of a conversation with my former flute professor when she mentioned composer Augusta Read Thomas to me, and sadly, I did not know who she was.

The project began in January of 2008, but was abandoned by March as I quickly succumbed to the rigors of writing a Masters thesis.  Thankfully, I have since completed the thesis, graduated, and have found the time and ambition to resurrect the project, hopefully to continue uninterrupted.

The format of the blog is still in its early stages, and since I created it just about a week ago, I have already changed it!  I still plan on posting a new composer each Monday or Tuesday and with subsequent posts covering areas of listening, purchasing, and upcoming events for the composers.  However, I have abandoned the idea of posting the PDF newsletters, 1) to save space, 2) to allow for a more mutlimedia-integrated approach, and 3) to make the blog more interesting in its own right.

I still write the newsletters and they are always available for those who may want them.  Just comment on the blog and note that you would like the posting in newsletter format.

I am always open to suggestions for new composers to research, discovered errors in print or research, and just plain old comments.  And remember to subscribe to the blog!
